Sister Catherine (Michael Ann) Dominick, BVM

Sister Catherine (Michael Ann) Dominick, BVM, 93, of Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1160 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.

Visitation, the Sharing of Memories and Mass of Christian Burial were on Thursday, June 16, 2022. Burial was in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Sister Catherine was an elementary teacher at Sacred Heart in Maquoketa, Iowa, and a cook at St. Patrick in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  She also taught in elementary schools in Clinton, Iowa; Chicago; and Clarksdale, Miss.  She worked as a secretary for an insurance company and as a coordinator for the hospital accreditation commission in Chicago and as a cook in East Moline, Ill.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1929, in Chicago to Thomas and Mary (Houlihan) Dominick. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1948, from Our Lady of Angels Parish, Chicago. She professed first vows on March 19, 1951, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1956.

“As for so many of us, 2020 was a most difficult year for Catherine. ‘I thought I couldn’t take any more,’ she wrote. ‘The confinement to our rooms, not being able to see family or each other, all our deceased sisters, not being able to hug. Then, when I was at my lowest, through God’s word to the Apostle Paul, to my unanswered prayer, God said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ (2 Corinthians 12:9). Catherine was grateful for all the small kindnesses she received during those days, during all her days of her life. ‘I have stayed strong so I could convey my thanks and happiness . . . You are all remembered in my daily prayers.’ We have been blessed by Catherine’s ministries and her prayers and are confident of her continued intercessions for us as she is of ours. Rest in peace and love, dear Catherine.” (Eulogy).

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers John “Jack” and Thomas Dominick; and sisters Bernadette, Therese, Regina and Joan Dominick, and Agnes Keller.  She is survived by nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 73 years.

Memorials may be given to Sisters of Charity, BVM, 1100 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, IA 52003 or online at https://www.bvmsisters.org/support_donate.cfm.
