Sister Evelyn Owusu: BVM Mary I. Griffin Scholarship Recipient

Sister Evelyn Owusu desires to help sisters in her congregation, the Daughters of the Most Blessed Trinity (formerly FST), and others in Kumasi, Ghana, gain necessary management skills for effective operations and growth. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and is currently pursuing her Licentiate degree in leadership and management at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Evelyn served in the FST bursar’s office for five years and realized that one of the major challenges to the growth of most institutions is due to management issues. She discovered that the necessary skills essential for individuals to understand and manage resources were lacking and oftentimes led to problems. Upon completion of the Licentiate degree, Evelyn plans to teach management and leadership skills through seminars and workshops for her sisters and lay people in Kumasi who are in charge of local institutions and projects. Her goal is to equip them with the knowledge they need to manage resources smoothly and effectively.

Mary Anne (Bernard Marie) Hoope, BVM recommended Evelyn for the scholarship, noting that she is a dedicated young sister who has worked very hard. “Completing her degree will be a great gift to  her congregation and community leaders when she returns home to Ghana,” Mary Anne says. “I have known Sister Evelyn since she entered the Daughters of the Most Blessed Trinity . . . Without  much training, she was appointed bursar of the community and has done an admirable job,” Mary Anne continues. Evelyn shares, “The scholarship received last year was very helpful to me in so many ways.” The Licentiate degree combines academics with faith and is known for its focus on servant leadership for Christian leaders and managers in church and secular institutions.

Appreciative of the continued BVM funding, Evelyn remarks, “I am very grateful to the BVM sisters for the financial support through the Mary I. Griffin Scholarship that made it possible for me to  obtain this all enriching faith-based knowledge . . . [it] has really impacted my professional and life skills which I believe will enhance my quality of life and my ability to be of service to my congregation, local community, and others who could benefit from this training.”

Evelyn also expressed her thankfulness for the relationship she has formed with Mary Anne. Her love is evident, remarking, “Sister Mary Anne Hoope has been my spiritual director since I joined the  FST congregation . . . she has been a great companion, mentor, friend, and mother on my journey into religious life . . . I am so blessed and thankful to God to have encountered her . . . I see God in  her.”
