Backpacks for Refugees

It all started with the devastating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and a desire to do something. Impacted by the tens of thousands of Afghans trying to flee from the Taliban takeover of their homeland, Vice President Kate Hendel decided to act. She began a search that eventually landed her on the website of Church World Services (CWS). She learned that CWS partners with border shelters across the U.S. southern border, providing asylum seekers with basic needs as they await processing. Intrigued by their outreach program, “CWS Welcome Backpacks,” Kate shared her discovery with congregational employee Rhonda Wernimont.

Broken into groups BVM LaVerne (Thereselle) Dolphin is assigned to the snack station.

After hearing how this program helps unaccompanied minors and families make their transition to America, Rhonda quickly joined in. Soon, a team was formed.

Employees Christine Olsem, Lori Hesseling, Kate, and Rhonda decided to spearhead an event that would get 50 backpacks into the hands of the Afghan refugee children. In no time, the group had created an event, sent an email to congregational employees, and created sign-up sheets for the needed supplies.

Thirty minutes later, the ladies fought back tears as the sign-up sheets were full. The need of healthy snacks, children’s activities, blankets, and basic hygiene items was met.

As the supplies began to come in, Kate and Rhonda witnessed not only joy, but also a real sense of team building. It was heart-rending to see everyone come together and give their money and time to this cause.

The excitement was palpable as sisters and staff gathered in St. Joseph Hall in the BVM Motherhouse. Launched with pizza and conversation, the party officially started. Well organized tables, full of the donated supplies awaited. Kate gave instructions and packing commenced. Team members collected the supplies and sisters wrote welcome notes that would be put into each backpack.

Sisters and staff put the “Heart of BVM” into this project.

“It only took minutes,” Rhonda says, and shares that she and Kate watched in awe. They likened it to a race—quick and thrilling . . . with a humbling result. Resident Nancy McCarthy was also touched by the occasion, stating that as she wrote welcome letters, she “felt close to the individuals” she was writing to and that it made her feel “a part of the greater whole. . . which was a wonderful way of connecting with the Afghan refugees.”

Reflecting on the experience, Kate and Rhonda felt the goal of 50 backpacks was “just right.” It was manageable and doable. They even had some extra supplies that they sent along to CWS. Looking forward, both ladies expressed desire to have the sisters even more involved in outreach.

“Awe-inspiring, humbling and grateful” are just a few words they used to describe hosting the “CWS Welcome Backpack” drive. The only thing sweeter than the event’s ice cream finale, is knowing that the Afghan refugee children will know that they are welcome and loved.
