Sister Elizabeth (Elizabeth Mary) Huber, BVM

Sister Elizabeth (Elizabeth Mary) Huber, BVM, 91, of Mount Carmel Bluffs, Dubuque, Iowa, died on Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, at Mount Carmel Bluffs.
Visitation, Sharing of Memories, and Mass of Christian Burial were on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025. Burial was in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Sister Elizabeth was an instructor at Clarke University, Dubuque, Iowa, and Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. She served as a secondary mathematics teacher at Heelan High School in Sioux City; Our Lady of Peace in St Paul, Minn.; and Ryan High School in Omaha, Nebr. She also was a teacher for the Guadalupe Area Project in West Saint Paul, Minn., and the Art & Spirituality City Academy in Mendota Heights, Minn.
She was born May 15, 1934, in Sioux City to Max and Elizabeth (Beaulieu) Huber. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1955, from St. Boniface Parish, Sioux City. She professed first vows on Feb. 3, 1958, and final vows on July 16, 1963.
“Elizabeth acquired an interest in eastern art . . . [and] desired to share the spiritual mystery, the peace and serenity of this ancient art form with others. She arranged exhibits for groups of religious women and had her collection displayed at a Presbyterian church. [Eventually] Elizabeth began painting her own icons according to ancient Russian techniques.” (Eulogy, Mary Frances Clarke Chapel, Sept. 9, 2025.)
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Robert (Barbara) and Rev. Leo Huber. She is survived by two nieces, a nephew, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 69 years.

Sister Mary Elizabeth was one of the biggest formation forces in my high school years at OLP. She supported me and made learning fun. That was one of the biggest reasons I entered the BVMs after graduation.
