Associate David McGhee September 22, 1937 – September 5, 2024, Accepted December 09, 1996
“A man of service and prayer,” is a description often assigned to Rev. David (Dave) McGhee. His ever-present smile, deep aura of peace, and gentle presence melded well with his devotion to peace-making and serving others.
His relationship with the BVM community began in grade school at St. Anthony’s in Dubuque, Iowa. In fact, one of the people who recommended David for association was his former schoolteacher S.M. Vincentia Kaeferstein, BVM (d.) who stated, “Becoming an associate is one way of satisfying his desire to grow ‘in prayer, spirit, and service.’”
He graduated from Loras College and married Alice (d.) a Clarke graduate. In the 60s, they took their children to the Bahamas where they served as missionaries. He embodied his commitment to education during his 35 years as a special ed teacher.
In 1977, he became ordained as a deacon. He was fondly referred to by the title “Deacon Dave” by many who knew him through his work as a deacon, as a member of the Dubuque Archdiocese’ Marriage Tribunal, and as the Associate Pastor at Nativity Church.
In December of 1996, Dave and Alice became BVM associates. They were active in attending many functions at Mount Carmel. Our prayers go out to the family and friends of David McGhee. We are grateful for his legacy of peacebuilding and prayer.
