A Pope for Our Times

We are saddened to hear of Pope Francis’ death. This humble man was a pope for our times and for all the world. As a spiritual leader, he gave hope to the people, making space to accompany, listen, and dialogue with them. He was a true brother of the poor instructing those who proclaim the gospel to take on the smell of the sheep, to be in solidarity with the poor.
His encyclical Laudato Si’ pointedly addressed the connection between climate change, our extractive economy, and the plight of the poor. His effort to open dialogue between the pastors of the Church and the people through synodality, encourage the involvement of lay leadership, and advocate for a Church actively engaged with the world puts charity at the heart of our mission.
We mourn his passing and are grateful for his life and leadership. In his call for us to become builders of hope, may we see how our Catholic faith urges us toward tenderness and charity.
