Giving Thanks

Scientific research tells us that there are many benefits that one may experience when expressing gratitude: improved physical health, fewer aches and pains, an increased immune system, and more energy to exercise. It can add to psychological health with reduced anxiety and resentment, and a more positive outlook. Expressing gratitude also plays a key role in forming relationships, as well as in strengthening existing ones.

Well, with that all said, gratitude takes on new meaning in unexpected places.

Several months ago, my local community moved to a new location to accommodate a change of ministry site. This move meant a longer commute to work which I was not looking forward to, but many wonderful surprises ensued.

My commute became my new contemplative space to pray and give thanks. I am able to watch the farmstead silhouettes on the morning horizons with the rising sun. I get to watch the fields of harvested corn turn into enormous bales waiting to be bedding for farm animals. With the commute, a litany of gratitude for people takes place.

At night, the changing moon, with the planets of Venus and Mars, and numerous star constellations brings me great joy and reminds me of an earlier time, when I would see them daily. I will have to brush up on the names of the winter constellations.

I am grateful. I invite you to join me in practicing gratitude and giving thanks—especially for what may seem to be inconveniences (or plans not going the way we want). At times, I do have to remind myself to express gratitude, but now is the time to begin again and keep on practicing “giving thanks.”
