Associate Mary Therese Gill May 2, 1931 – February 4, 2022

BVM Associate Mary Therese Gill passed away on February 4, 2022.

Mary Therese was born on May 2, 1931, in San Francisco, CA. She was a graduate of St. Paul’s High School in San Francisco and joined the BVMs after graduation (SM Marcellina, 3505).   Her nephew, David Hoska, shared the two pictures below of Therese in her habit and of her set at Mt. Carmel. She left the community in 1969 and settled in San Francisco, where she worked for the city in the Department of Social Services until she retired.

Therese traveled to many different countries, read a lot, and lived quietly, at one time sharing an apartment with associate Arline Eliot. David fondly remembers spending family times and holidays with his generous Aunt Mary. Therese became a BVM associate on January 14, 2003, companioned by BVMs Eleanor Burke and Maureen O’Brien.  In her affirmation letter, Maureen said that Therese’s participation in their cluster was “lively and her own lifestyle is in harmony with our BVM mission…uses this opportunity to reach out to others, especially the poor and marginated [sic].”

She was living in a retirement hotel when she went on hospice and there was hope, unrealized, that she could get into the Coming Home Hospice, which was the former convent of Most Holy Redeemer, where Therese had once been the principal and superior.  Memorial services have not been set as of yet.

Cards and memories can be shared with her nephew David Hoska, 21 Arlington Drive, South San Francisco, CA 94080.

Mary Therese Gill is in the third row from the bottom the last person on the left.
