Associate Alice McGhee August 24, 1936 – October 25, 2022, Accepted December 9, 1996

BVM Associate Alice K. McGhee died on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa. She was born on August 24, 1936, to Nicholas and Delores (Schmitt) Kamp in Dubuque, Iowa. Alice wrote in her application for Association, “When I was in college, as a sophomore, I transferred to Clarke and came to admire the Sisters so much. I would like to know the sisters better.”  Her son said in her eulogy that his mother (Alice) always wanted people to know not that she had graduated from college, but that she had graduated from Clarke College. Alice graduated in 1960 from Clarke. She later married Deacon, David McGhee, who also is a BVM associate. They have two daughters, a son, and six grandchildren.

Alice taught junior and senior high school for most of her career as a substitute teacher at several schools in the Dubuque area.  She was a eucharistic minister and spent much of her time caring for her 89-year-old aunt. Alice enjoyed caring about people, had a great sense of humor, and always had a willingness to learn. Through the years, Alice was an active member of the Church of the Nativity and its Rosary Society.

Alice became an associate in 1996. Her companion was BVMs Joanna Rettenmeier Vincentia Kaeferstein, and Associate Betty Takes

Mass of Christian Burial was held on October 29, 2022, at the Church of the Nativity.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque later.
